Off-chip Memory
The Xilinx FPGAs have some on chip Block RAMs, and also distributed memory. However this is often not enough for your application. We offer modules that have 128 or 256Mbytes of SDRAM connected directly to the FPGA pins. Using the VHDL SDRAM controller that we supply as part of our Hardware Interface Layer, you can achieve around 500Mbytes/second of data transfer between the FPGA and memory. Remember because the FPGA uses dedicated pins to access the memory, it is not affected by any other I/O (for example to the inter-module FIFOs).
See the data sheets for:-
| HERON-FPGA5 | 1M gate Virtex®-II FPGA with 256Mbytes SDRAM |
| HERON-FPGA7 | 3,6 or 8M gate Virtex®-II FPGA with 256Mbytes SDRAM |
| HERON-FPGA9 | 1M gate Virtex®-II Pro FPGA with PowerPC processor and 128Mbytes DDR SDRAM |
| HERON-FPGA12 | Virtex®-4 FX FPGA with PowerPC processor and 128Mbytes DDR SDRAM |
| HERON-FPGA14 | Virtex®-4 LX60/SX35 FPGA with 128Mbytes DDR SDRAM |
If you need something that you don't see here, you could design it yourself using the HERON specification or ask us - we may be working on something already or be able to propose another way of solving your problem
